What is sedation?
Intra-venous sedation can be used to make the experience of treatment easier for some patients.
This involves an injection into an arm or the back of a hand of a powerful sedative to calm a nervous patient.
Sedation has three main effects; to promote a feeling of calm within the patient; to reduce patient awareness of treatment; to provide a powerful amnesia so that the patient remembers very little of the procedure. Most importantly, you will not lose consciousness or be ‘sent to sleep’. Whilst the effects are variable, most people enter a state that allows treatment to be performed without undue patient anxiety.
If you've been putting off years of dental work, sedation can change your life. Imagine not being afraid to go to the dentist. Imagine being able to accomplish all your dental care in as little as one appointment. This is what sedation can do for you. You'll be able to smile with confidence and chew your food without pain.
You will be well looked after before, during and after the sedation procedure by experienced members of the dental team. They will make sure that you are relaxed and completely comfortable and they monitor you very closely while you're sedated. Many patients feel no discomfort whatsoever during and after treatment, and have little or no memory of the visit.
The drug used is Midazolam, usually 10mg, and is very safe. We monitor the pulse and oxygen saturation throughout the procedure and a reversal agent, Anexate, is available. During the procedure, the dentist will always be accompanied by a qualified and suitably trained dental assistant.
We also use the services of a Consultant Anaesthetist for those patients with specific medical requirements or who desire using our consultant services. Our consultant works alongside our dental team to ensure our patients’ wellbeing and safe health
